Andrews welcomes announcement that “Headshop” substances to be banned

Deputy Chris Andrews TD, has today (4th February 2010) warmly welcomed the announcement by his Government colleague, the Minister for Health that legislation will be ready within one month to ban a number of substances currently available to purchase in so-called “headshops” around the country.

Speaking today Deputy Andrews said, “I am very pleased with this news. In common with most people, I have been greatly concerned by recent reports detailing the potential serious health risks associated with the consumption of many of the products available in these retail outlets.”

“The Minister has been advised that notification to the European Commission is required to ensure that the new regulations banning these substances are valid. That being the case, the law should be in place in Ireland by June this year.”

“The Government is facing an ongoing battle in this area as unfortunately as soon as one substance is banned, another with a slightly different composition is produced in its place. However, I know I and my colleagues are committed to ensuring that these dangerous substances are taken off the market.”
